Community Procession

Organizers

Salt Spring Arts
Graffitti Theatre
Transition Salt Spring

Venue

Mahon Hall
114 Rainbow Road

You are invited!

Participate in a community procession through Ganges to help express the urgency of our global and local situation. The village is predicted to be overtaken by the rising tideline by the year 2100. Can we change this outcome? What does this mean for our community and its inhabitants? What does it mean for our wildlife and ecosystems?

Costumes, signs, puppets!

Community members and groups are all welcome to join the procession with any type of costumes, signage, puppets, or performance that describes your feelings about climate change at this time. Everyone is welcome to be super creative and use anything at your disposal to express yourself. Contingents from community groups are particularly welcome.

Meet at Mahon Hall!

12:30 on September 24 to muster for a 40 minute procession through the town, ending at the Mateada for an afternoon of performances and art.

Procession participants will be joined by indigenous dancers and led by a group of performers as we walk through our community together, ending our journey at the Mateada where we will be met by a variety of speakers and performers who will bring us together in our shared experience of the effects of climate change on us personally and collectively.

Make-at-Home art project for the community processional!
– print this salmon pdf graciously offered by artist Quentin Harris and make it as colourful as you like (one for each side)
– attach it to some cardboard or poster board
– glue on a popsicle stick (in the centre works best)
– bring it and walk with us in the community processional to bring awareness to climate change issues on Salt Spring!
A little about Artist and Educator; Quentin Harris
Every student across the Gulf Islands affectionately called Quentin by his ‘real name’ – Q-cumber! He is a part of the Indigenous Education team that promotes and celebrates all things Indigenous. He visits all schools and is currently engaged in a few large projects with students and local community – a totem pole carving at Phoenix Elementary, a welcome pole being carved at GISS and a few carved murals at Fernwood and Pender Islands. Quentin is an artist in his own right (when he gets time!) and is married to Ann Marie of 26 years and has a daughter Asia (VIU Nursing Program) and a son Noah (Grade 11).
