Robert George (Qwiahultuhw) an Elder from Quw’utsun (Cowichan) will lead a welcome ceremony and teaching at Xwaaqw’um (colonially known as Burgoyne Bay) and will be joined by Metis Elder and Helper Pamela Bourque.

This event is free and open to everyone – settlers, newcomers and Indigenous people – and will be a rare and wonderful opportunity to learn about the relationships and teachings of some of the Indigenous peoples of this land.

Please bring a chair or something to sit on, snacks and water, and any gear needed to be outside for several hours.

Location and Parking

  • The event will take place at the canoe/kayak launch site (not at the Welcome Poles as previously stated).
  • Remember to carpool or take public transit as PARKING IS VERY LIMITED.
  • Everyone please park up by the barns on the way down to the parking lots and then walk down to the end of the road to the canoe/kayak launch.
  • Except for:
    • Any indigenous or non-indigenous elders or those with mobility challenges can park at the event site- drive to the end of Burgoyne Bay Rd, follow signs and take the 2nd driveway on the left at the top parking lot. The 1st driveway on the left is for the government dock – please don’t go there.
    • Those with decent mobility can park in the parking lots on the right towards Daffodil Point and then walk back up to the top parking lot and down to the launch/event site.

There will be signs to point the way.
