Native Plant Stewardship on Salt spring island
Native Plant Stewardship group
This group works to educate our community about the benefits of native plants and the negative impacts of prolific, invasive species that often out-compete them. We're passionate about protecting local ecosystems and empowering our community to do the same.
Members and volunteers are needed throughout the year for our various events, education, and activities. Contact Deborah Miller to get involved!
Projects & Priorities
Here's a look at some of our ongoing efforts:
Educational Outreach
Shared monthly articles in local media on the benefits of native plants and problems related to invasive species. Publicized lists of local native plants for sunny and shady areas, and those that are fire-resistant, plus links to other Resources. (see below)
Invasive Plant Drop-Offs
Hosted community drop-off events with support from local grants and volunteers.
Habitat Restoration
Removed broom at our Long Harbour Road demo site and gorse, yellow flag iris, hairy cat's ear, daphne, holly and ivy at various island sites to support native plant recovery.
Community Engagement
Participated in Seedy Saturday and local plant sales to share information about the benefits of growing native plants and the need for controlling invasives.
Volunteer Work Parties
Organized ivy removal days in Mouat Park with the help of dedicated community members.
Invasive Species Awareness
Raised public awareness about the risks to local ecosystems posed by shiny geranium and other invasive plants.

CRD Invasive Species
Invasive species are plants, animals and microbes that are not native to a region and that tend to out-compete native species for available resources. They often form dense populations and dominate ecosystems. After habitat loss, invasive species are considered to be the second greatest threat to global biological diversity.
