Transition Salt Spring Launches Updated Wood Smoke Reduction Rebates for 2023

Starting in March, rebates of up to $1000 will be available to Southern Gulf Island residents upgrading an old wood stove to a new EPA-2020 wood stove, insert, or a heat pump.

SALT SPRING ISLAND, March 22, 2023 — Transition Salt Spring’s Climate Action Coach (CAC) will launch its updated Wood Smoke Reduction Rebates later this month. Rebates of $300-$1000 will be available to Salt Spring and Southern Gulf Island residents switching old wood stoves. The program aims to reduce pollutants in air quality and help residents practice safer burning practices to reduce community smoke.

Rebates available:
$1000 to upgrade your wood stove to a heat pump (*with the option to keep the existing wood stove if it is Certified)
$500 to upgrade your uncertified wood stove to a certified wood stove
$400 to upgrade your uncertified insert to an electric insert
$300 bounty to decommission and recycle uncertified wood stove, with no heat upgrade

“At Transition Salt Spring, we recommend anyone with an old wood stove upgrade to a Heat Pump as their primary heating source and use their existing wood stove during power outages and extreme cold. If a heat pump isn’t feasible, we offer a rebate to upgrade to an EPA-2020 Certified wood stove,” says TSS Climate Action Coach Morgan Fraser.

Salt Spring and Southern Gulf Island households can sign up for Community Wood Smoke Reduction Rebate pre-screening at transtionsaltspring.com/coach to check your eligibility. Rebates are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
