Ready to take climate action?

Transition Salt Spring hopes to empower islanders to take impactful actions for a sustainable future. At the heart of our organization is a dedicated board and part-time staff, supported by a ton of volunteers in our committees and working groups.

This caring, engaged community—your neighbours, co-workers, and friends—includes scientists, educators, and creative thinkers ready to tackle climate change together.

But to change everything - we need everyone. Together, we can create a brighter future for Salt Spring Island!

Start a Group or Bring Your Group In

Imagine launching a group that makes a real impact in our community. Well, Transition Salt Spring can help you bring that vision to life.

We support volunteer working groups to take action, offering a $250 startup fund, insurance coverage, and direct access to over 2,700 supporters via our website, social media, and newsletters.

Some examples of our current working groups are: The Native Plant Stewardship Group, the Marine Stewardship Group, the Rainbow Road Community Garden Group, and the Biochar Group. The EV Group just retired this year, after fourteen years of amazing work to promote EV’s and charging infrastructure on Salt Spring.

Could you be the next person with a great idea and a passion to make a difference?

Here are some ideas for new TSS working groups:

    1. Adopt a Roadside: Organize a team to care for a section of Salt Spring's roads by removing invasive plants and litter. Your group's hands-on efforts will protect the island's natural beauty and ecosystems.
    2. Friday Art for Kids: Inspire young minds by starting an eco-art group that teaches children the power of creativity and sustainability. Transform everyday waste into art, nurturing environmental awareness from a young age.
    3. Reusable Container Initiative: Help the island reduce waste by standardizing reusable containers. Your group can make sustainable living easy and accessible for everyone, tackling waste reduction head-on.
    4. Eliminate Single-Use Plastics: Be a leader in sustainability by working to phase out single-use plastics on Salt Spring Island. Your efforts can protect our environment and personal health by reducing the use of plastics in our community.
    5. Protect the Salish Sea: Form a group to defend the pristine waters of the Salish Sea from threats like proposed tanker anchorages. Your group could help safeguard this vital marine ecosystem for generations to come.
    6. Promote Ridesharing: Reduce traffic and lower emissions by starting a rideshare program on Salt Spring Island. Your group can foster community connections while creating a practical solution for sustainable transportation.

For high school students, the possibilities are just as exciting:

    1. Composting for Change: Start a composting initiative to make your school greener and provide students with hands-on experience in sustainable practices.
    2. Youth Climate Action Group: Bring your peers together to tackle climate change head-on. By leading with innovative ideas and a unified voice, your group can create lasting, impactful solutions.
    3. Revive the GISS Recycling Program: Help the environment and your school by reinstating the recycling program. Your efforts will reduce waste and inspire others to join the movement.

The support we offer includes:

  • start-up funding
  • record-keeping and bookkeeping
  • directors insurance and liability insurance
